48 Hours in Porto
Porto packs a lot of charm into a small space, which makes it perfect for a short trip. Two days is enough to feel its rhythm without rushing. Here is how we spent a gentle weekend by the Douro river.
Day one: the old town
Start in the Ribeira district, where narrow lanes tumble down to the water. The tiled churches and painted houses reward slow walking, so leave the map in your pocket and simply wander. Cross the great iron bridge on foot for a wide view over the rooftops.
In the afternoon, visit one of the bookshops that inspired so many readers, then rest with a coffee and a custard tart. As the light softens, find a spot on the far bank and watch the boats drift by.
Day two: port and the coast
Porto gave port wine its name, so a visit to a riverside cellar is well worth your time. A short tasting explains how the wine is made and aged, and it costs far less than you might expect.
Later, hop on the old tram out to the coast. The sea air, the lighthouse and a plate of fresh fish make a fine way to close the trip.
Quick tips
- Wear shoes with grip, since the streets are steep and often cobbled.
- Buy a rechargeable transit card for trams and the metro.
- Book port tastings ahead on weekends to skip the wait.
Porto is easy to love and easy to reach. Give it a weekend and it will give you a warm welcome in return.
