How to Travel With Only a Carry On
Packing light changed the way we travel. No waiting at baggage claim, no fees, no heavy bag to drag up stairs. After many trips we settled on a system that fits a week or a month into one carry on. Here is how it works.
Start with a short list
Most people pack for the trip they fear rather than the trip they will take. We write a list, then remove a third of it. You will wear the same favorites again and again, so pack those and leave the maybes at home. Almost anything you forget can be bought on the road.
Choose one color story
When your clothes share a simple color palette, every piece works with every other piece. Three tops and two bottoms can become many outfits. This one habit saves the most space of all.
Roll, then use cubes
Rolling clothes saves room and reduces creases. Packing cubes then keep everything sorted so you never dig through the whole bag to find one shirt. One cube for tops, one for bottoms, one for small items. Simple and calm.
The layering rule
Instead of packing for cold weather, pack layers that build on each other. A light base, a warm middle and a compact rain shell will cover most climates. You wear the bulkiest layer on the plane to save space in the bag.
A sample carry on kit
- Three shirts, one long sleeve and one light sweater.
- Two pairs of trousers and one pair that also works for evenings.
- Underwear and socks for four days, then wash as you go.
- One pair of comfortable shoes worn, one light pair packed.
- A small toiletry bag with travel sized bottles.
Wash small and often
The secret to a small bag is a sink and a little soap. Washing a few items every couple of nights means you never need a week of clothes. Everything dries by morning if you roll it in a towel first.
Travel light and the road feels lighter too. You move faster, worry less and carry only what you truly need.
