Lisbon on a Budget: A Week Under Your Limit
Lisbon is proof that a city can feel rich even when your wallet is light. The hills roll down to the river, the light turns gold in the late afternoon, and much of what makes the city special costs nothing at all. We spent a week here and kept our budget calm the whole time.
Sleep a little outside the center
Rooms in the tourist heart carry a premium. We stayed one neighborhood over and reached the main sights in fifteen minutes on foot. The streets were quieter, the cafes were cheaper, and we felt more like residents than visitors.
Let your feet do the work
Lisbon is made for walking, even with its famous hills. We skipped most paid transport and simply wandered. When our legs needed a rest, we rode the historic tram once for the experience, then walked the rest. The best viewpoints, known locally as miradouros, are free and open to everyone.
Eat like a local
A pastel de nata, the classic custard tart, costs very little and tastes like a small holiday. For lunch we looked for the daily set menu, called the prato do dia, which local workers rely on. It usually includes a main dish, bread and a drink for a fair price.
Free and almost free things to do
- Watch the sunset from a miradouro with a picnic.
- Explore the Alfama district and follow the sound of fado music.
- Visit churches and small museums on their free entry days.
- Take the ferry across the river for a cheap ride with a great view.
A simple daily rhythm
We found that a loose plan saved both money and stress. One paid highlight in the morning, a slow lunch, a long walk in the afternoon, then a cheap dinner near our room. This kept spending steady and left plenty of energy for the next day.
Lisbon does not ask you to spend big. It asks you to show up, look around and enjoy the light. That part is always free.
