Hiking the W Trek in Patagonia

The W Trek in Torres del Paine is one of the great walks of the world. Over several days you cross valleys, forests and windswept passes, with granite towers and glaciers waiting around each bend. It asks something of you, and it gives back far more.

Know the route

The trek is named for its shape on the map, a rough letter W. Most walkers take four or five days and stay in a mix of huts and campsites along the way. You can walk it in either direction, though many start from the east to save the famous towers for a sunrise finish.

Respect the weather

Patagonia is famous for its wind, and it can arrive without warning. Pack layers you can add and remove quickly, a solid rain shell and gloves even in summer. Clear skies can turn to sideways rain within the hour, so flexibility matters more than any fixed plan.

Book beds early

The huts and campsites fill months ahead in the busy season. Reserve your places as soon as your dates are set, since you cannot simply turn up and hope. Carry a printed copy of every booking, because signal in the park is rare.

What to carry

  • A comfortable pack that you have already tested on long walks.
  • Broken in boots and spare dry socks.
  • Plenty of snacks for energy between meals.
  • A refillable bottle, since the streams here run clean and cold.

Walk your own pace

The towers reward an early start, yet the real gift of the trek is the rhythm of your own feet. Let faster groups pass, pause for the views and eat lunch by a lake. Patagonia is not a race. It is a place to feel small in the best possible way.

Finish the last climb, watch the light hit the towers and you will understand why people cross the world for this walk.
